Le Carre uses Control for his top guy in the spy dept. There is mosst
likely a C/Control - or several of them.

In Star Drive, well - Blake would have tried to save Dr. Plaxton.
However, if Avon was right, then Plaxton and all the crew would have been
dead. Neil would do the same thing as Avon, for Avon's reasons, I would
think. If I was Dr. Plaxton (who was warned to hurry it up), I would
certainly prefer to take my chances with Blake. Avon's crew was
horrified (I was too). Nonetheless, he may have saved their lives.

Avon's behavior in Orbit is horrifying. But it is not his typical
behavior, either - much of his Fourth Season behavior is erratic. There
are counter examples like Horizon. Usually, Avon verbalizes his worst
motivites - that doesn't mean he acts on them. But I remember when I was
first watching Sandbaggers, I joked that if it was Neil in Orbit, he
would have thought the tachyon funnel more important than he or Willie.
Willie would have been first out the air lock. If that didn't lighten
the ship enough, Neil would have thrown himself out, and sent the funnel
home.
