Nice piece of work. I have a few quibbles. I think Neil and Laura are attracted
to each other precisely because of their emotional problems. I don't think Neil
is gentle and kind (necessarily), but rather that he is afraid of intimacy. So
it makes sense to be attracted to someone like Laura (he's read her file, after
all) who won't threaten the barriers he's erected around himself. Yes, he does
want to sleep with her, but he is also afraid. Sometimes your greatest hope is
your greatest fear. But essentially I think his heart was closed long before he
met Laura.
As for Neil finding comfort in Marianne's arms... I don't believe she's
interested in him, but I know others will agree with you. I had a lengthy debate
with someone (was it Gayle?) about this last year.
