It's not unusual that he wouldn't fit right in. Willie and Neil
shared many years of field work together, and, in fact, Mike was really
the only main male character who didn't have a *lot* of history with Neil.
As 'new kid on the block', he was given respect and as much warmth as Neil
offered anyone, but it would take time and experience (I'm thinking of
interpersonal experience, not professional) for him to 'fit in' to the
strange circle of men who were (what passes for) close to Neil...
