Neil's relationship with Laura is a perfect example of why British TV
is head and shoulders above American TV -- even their low-budget spy
shows that get cancelled after two seasons. Neither Neil, nor Laura, nor
Wellingham are simple people. They are rich, complex characters who
feel real to us, and make us debate their motivations years later. The
most two-dimensional character in the show was Peele, and even he had
his moments.
And it isn't just the writing, it's the acting, too. Who can forget Laura's
brave, tremulous look as she walked towards the barrier in Berlin? The
combination of fear, exhaustion, relief, and anticipation on her face
*all at once* was nothing short of brilliant.
We'll never know what Laura's hangups were, and we'll never know how Neil
really felt about her. I desperately wanted to know more about both of them,
and the sense of loss and anger I felt when she died was intense.
