Agreed with most of what you said with one notation. As in the episode
you described, if you take all of Burnsides actions, he was a relatively
obediant spy. When Willie and Jake were to be sent to the Russian border
to rescue scientists despite the impossibility of success and because
the UK gov. wanted to woo the Norwegians to purchase a troubled high
tech weapon, Burnside still reluctantly planned and executed it even
though he knew it was folly. I see Burnside consumed with frustration
over his and other Western governemnts refusal to forcefully stand up to
the Soviets. He seems to agree with Whitaker Chambers who believed that
Communsm would triumph in the end (and died before seeing the opposite
result) .
