And we might add that having women as real people was not the norm for the
1970s TV fare in the USA.... so by standards of the day SB was ahead of its
time...

the comments about "parking the best feature" can best be explained as
perfect for the character of a middle-aged man in the 70s from conservative
America...

chauvanism is excessive patriotism... used in the 70s as "male chauvanist
pig" to mean sexist... though I think the whole attitude is closer to
segregationists, in that the world is viewed as "Us-people-like-me" and
then there are the "others-who-are-not-quite-so-good." Neil wasn't, but
yes Neil was patriotic, and I guess any woman wearing an american uniform
today would be one too... or maybe even a chauvanist....

Oh...... I just saw the last episodes of the SB for the first time, and
*what a difference a writer makes* Ian always had two intertwined plots
moving to resolution throuhout the hour, while the other stories are just
one story plots. I tend to think of the story line in the SB as being
*dense and heavy with information*... the last few are rather feathery
light.... ah.... maybe Ian's living with the Inuit somewhere....

Just my thoughts....
